New NYS mask mandate in effect (12.13.21)
Dear Northeast College community,
To protect our campus community, our College has had a mask mandate in place for much of the pandemic and continuously since August 6 of this year. Recently, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new state-wide public mask mandate which went into effect Dec. 13, 2021. Details may be found at https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-major-action-address-winter-surge-and-prevent-business-disruption.
The new NYS mandate has several specific requirements, including:
- All persons over the age of 2 and able to medically tolerate a face covering/mask, regardless of vaccination status, must wear an appropriate mask in any indoor public place (including Northeast's campus and facilities).
- Whereas previously there was flexibility allowing individuals to remove their masks when socially distanced (e.g. in meetings or in lecture settings), no such flexibility exists with the current mandate.
- The only exceptions to mask-wearing while indoors are while actively eating or drinking, or while in a private office setting.
- NY state has indicated the potential of fines for non-compliance.
The NYS mandate remains in effect until Jan. 15, 2022, at which time it will be reevaluated. Please note that Northeast's mask requirements may extend past the NYS expiration date, based on factors specific to the College.
We appreciate your continued help as we navigate this pandemic and related health measures together.
Please contact Ms. Carol Faivre (students), Ms. Christine McDermott (employees), your direct supervisor, or me with questions.
