Dr. Heck

Meet Heather Heck.

Education: Doctor of Chiropractic and M.S. in applied clinical nutrition

Heather Heck (D.C. ’08, M.S. ’08) has been a valued member of the Northeast College community for more than a decade, first as a dual-degree student and now as an adjunct professor in the College’s 100% online M.S. in applied clinical nutrition program.

She earned both her Doctor of Chiropractic and master’s in nutrition in 2008 from the College and has been working with patients in Ohio since 2009. What began as an ambitious academic path has evolved into a fully integrated professional identity grounded in whole-person care, a hallmark of the #NortheastBlue community.

A Whole-Health Approach

Heck’s decision to pursue both degrees began early in her training. Chiropractic taught her how to support the body’s structure and nervous system. At the same time, she saw how strongly nutrition and lifestyle choices shaped overall health and recovery. “True health is rarely the result of just one intervention,” she said.

“I wanted a deeper understanding of how food functions biochemically and how lifestyle can move patients toward healing or away from it,” Heck said. Rather than choosing one path, she chose both. For Heck, combining the programs felt like the most comprehensive way to care for patients as whole, integrated individuals.

Adopting a Whole-Food, Evidence-Informed Philosophy

The Applied Clinical Nutrition program, “reshaped my entire clinical mindset,” Heck said. Instead of viewing nutrients in isolation, she learned to assess whole-food patterns and their effects on inflammation, endocrine balance, digestion and neurological function.

That whole-food, evidence-informed philosophy now guides her patient care strategies. “I don’t just give recommendations. I help patients understand how food interacts with physiology. Dietary patterns can support or undermine long-term goals,” she said.

Case study-driven nutrition courses reinforced that she was not choosing between two professions but building one cohesive approach. Faculty with dual expertise in chiropractic and nutrition helped everything click and affirmed she was on the right path.

#NortheastBlue: Collaborative. Evidence-Informed. Committed.

Today, Heck rarely treats patients with chiropractic alone. “Whether it’s low back pain, neck pain, fatigue or digestive challenges, diet and lifestyle are always part of the outcome.”

She helps patients begin to understand the root cause behind their symptoms. “Having both professions helps me fit the puzzle pieces together and answer the questions they haven’t gotten answers to,” Heck said.

That integrated approach reflects what it means to be #NortheastBlue — collaborative, evidence-informed and focused on long-term wellness rather than short-term fixes.

Bringing It Full Circle as Faculty

Now back in the classroom as a faculty member, Heck brings her clinical experience directly to students. “My goal is to help them think like clinicians, not just memorize facts,” Heck said. She focuses on translating research into real-world patient care, emphasizing critical thinking, evidence evaluation, whole-food strategies and clear communication.

From student to practitioner to professor, Heck’s journey reflects the strength of a Northeast education, one that encourages integration, curiosity and service. It is a reminder that being #NortheastBlue is not just about earning a degree. It is about carrying forward a commitment to whole-person care and helping the next generation do the same.
